Bread And Butter Pickles
  • 2 gallons medium sized cucumbers.
  • 8 small white onions
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 small red pepper
  • ½ cup coarse-medium salt
  • cracked ice
  • ½ cup sugar
  • ½ cup vinegar
  • 1½ tsp. turmeric
  • 1½ tsp. cloves
  • 2 tsp. celery seeds
  • 2 Tbs. mustard seeds

    Slice cucumbers thin. Add sliced onions and peppers cut into narrow strips. Add salt, cover with cracked ice and mix thoroughly. Let stand 3 hours. Drain thoroughly. Combine remaining ingredients and pour over cucumber mixture. Bring just to a boil, Then seal in hot sterilized jars using new sterilized canning lids. Makes 8 pints.
